Councilmember At Large
The City of Poughkeepsie is the most ethnically diverse municipality in Dutchess County. Unfortunately, our city’s workforce is not ethnically representative of our city’s current population. Our Police and Fire Departments have struggled for many years to diversify the ranks. The Dutchess County Personnel Office in conjunction with the City’s Personnel Office and Police Department has held special test preparation classes, information sessions, and outreach/recruitment activities. Unfortunately, their efforts failed to yield any new minority police officers.   As the Chair of the Common Council, I would propose and explore the need to create an ad-hoc Diversity Committee made up of Councilmembers, local businesses leaders, non-profit managers and city department heads to review our hiring practices, recruitment strategies, and personnel policies. The committee would also review all city contract regulations and requirements related to various contracted services in an effort to increase and provide economic opportunity to the number of Minority & Women Owned Business Enterprises (MWBE) operating in the City of Poughkeepsie. Lastly, it would be the City of Poughkeepsie Diversity Committee purpose to provide specific  recommendations to the Common Council and the Mayor’s Office about how to provide equal economic and employment opportunity for all of our local residents.
