Councilmember At Large
Over the last 5 years, the Poughkeepsie School District has come under tremendous scrutiny for various reasons related to fiscal mismanagement, poor graduation rates, student violence, and voter fraud. As the Council Chair, I would call for ad-hoc School Board and Common Council committee to explore the possibility of expanding the five-member school board to seven. Even though the city appoints two non- voting members from the Common Council to serve as liaisons to the school board, the Common Council needs to take a more active role on the school board. The city cannot ignore the overall tax implications, allegations of voter fraud, high school drop-out rates, and the community’s negative  perception and reputation. These issues continue to hamper the city’s ability to attract new homebuyers/families and  businesses.
